Pointe du Hoc — A Defining Moment of D-Day
A dramatic cliff-top assault where U.S. Army Rangers scaled the cliffs to capture a vital German gun position overlooking Omaha and Utah Beaches.

Rising dramatically above the English Channel, Pointe du Hoc was one of the most important German defensive positions on the Normandy coast. Its location on the cliffs gave German artillery the ability to threaten the Allied landing beaches at Omaha and Utah, making its capture a critical objective for the invasion.

On the morning of 6 June 1944, around 225 U.S. Army Rangers were tasked with scaling the sheer cliffs under intense German fire and capturing the gun position. After reaching the top, they discovered that the main guns had been moved inland, but the Rangers continued their mission, locating and destroying the artillery pieces.

The battle was exceptionally fierce. By the end of the fighting, only a fraction of the original Ranger force remained in combat condition. Their success secured the position and prevented the German guns from being used against the Allied beaches.

Today, the site remains remarkably powerful. Bomb craters, concrete bunkers and shattered gun emplacements are still visible across the landscape, allowing visitors to understand the extraordinary difficulty of the assault.

At Pointe du Hoc, history is written directly into the landscape — a place where the cliffs, craters and concrete bunkers still convey the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the Rangers on D-Day.

Normandy American Cemetery — Colleville-sur-Mer
Overlooking Omaha Beach, this peaceful cemetery is the final resting place of more than 9,000 American servicemen who gave their lives during the Normandy campaign.

Perched above Omaha Beach, the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer is one of the most moving places to visit in Normandy. Entering the cemetery, the vast rows of white marble crosses and Stars of David immediately create a powerful sense of scale — each one representing an individual life interrupted far from home.

The cemetery was established on the site of the temporary American military cemetery created during the Battle of Normandy. Today, 9,386 American servicemen and women are buried here, while the names of 1,557 missing are inscribed on the Walls of the Missing. The grounds cover more than 170 acres overlooking the beach where many of those buried here came ashore on 6 June 1944.

What makes the experience particularly powerful is the connection between the peaceful landscape and what happened below it. From the edge of the cemetery, visitors can look down towards Omaha Beach — the same coastline where American forces faced some of the fiercest fighting of D-Day. The contrast between the tranquillity of the cemetery and the violence of that morning is deeply moving.

A quieter moment comes at the memorial colonnade, where a large bronze sculpture, Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves, stands at the centre of the memorial. Beyond it, the view towards the sea creates a direct visual connection between the young men commemorated here and the landscape where so many lost their lives.

The cemetery is also a place of continuing remembrance. The graves are maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, and many visitors come not simply as tourists but to pay respects, trace a family member or leave flowers at a particular grave.

Standing among the endless rows of graves, with Omaha Beach stretching below, the visit becomes intensely personal: behind the numbers and history are thousands of individual stories, and the extraordinary realization that many of these young men were scarcely older than today's visitors.

Longues-sur-Mer — German Battery
A remarkable German coastal battery overlooking the English Channel, where four original gun emplacements still stand as a powerful reminder of the Atlantic Wall.

Perched above the English Channel between Omaha and Gold Beaches, the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer offers one of the best places in Normandy to understand the defensive system faced by the Allies on D-Day.

Built between 1943 and 1944 as part of the Atlantic Wall, the battery consisted of four concrete casemates, each protecting a 152 mm naval gun capable of firing across the Channel. Its position was carefully chosen to command the approaches to the landing beaches and the sea between Bayeux and the coast.

On 6 June 1944, the guns opened fire on the Allied fleet. The battery exchanged fire with Allied warships, including the British battleship HMS Ajax, before being silenced. Allied troops subsequently secured the position, and the guns were no longer able to play a significant role in the defence of the beaches.

Today, Longues-sur-Mer is particularly remarkable because the four original gun casemates remain in place, remarkably well preserved despite the intense bombardment of D-Day. Walking between them gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Atlantic Wall not as an abstract military concept, but as a physical landscape of concrete, earth and sea.

The setting itself is striking: from the battery, the coastline stretches towards Arromanches and Gold Beach in one direction and Omaha Beach in the other, allowing visitors to understand the strategic geography of the invasion.

At Longues-sur-Mer, the Atlantic Wall meets the landscape: silent concrete gun positions remain above the sea, offering a tangible reminder of the enormous defensive system confronted by the Allied forces on D-Day.

Arromanches-les-Bains — Mulberry Harbour
A key D-Day port where the Allies built a temporary Mulberry Harbour to bring troops, vehicles and supplies ashore. Within days of the landings, the harbour became a vital lifeline for the Allied advance across Normandy.

Arromanches-les-Bains played a crucial role in the success of the Allied invasion, not because it was the site of the largest landing force, but because it became the location of one of the most extraordinary engineering achievements of D-Day: the Mulberry Harbour.

After the landings on 6 June 1944, the Allies faced an enormous logistical challenge. Thousands of soldiers, vehicles, tanks, fuel and vast quantities of supplies had to be brought ashore, yet the Germans still controlled most of the major ports. The solution was to build temporary artificial harbours directly off the Normandy coast.

At Arromanches, sections of the harbour were towed across the Channel and assembled offshore. Concrete caissons, floating piers and roadways created a temporary port capable of receiving ships and unloading supplies directly onto the beach.

The harbour became operational remarkably quickly and remained a vital supply route for the Allied armies during the campaign. Around 2.5 million men, 500,000 vehicles and millions of tonnes of supplies passed through the Arromanches harbour during its period of operation.

Today, the remains of the Mulberry Harbour can still be seen scattered across the bay. At low tide, enormous concrete structures emerge from the water, creating a remarkable connection between the peaceful landscape of today and the extraordinary scale of the operation in 1944.

Arromanches tells a different story of D-Day — not only of soldiers landing on a beach, but of the immense ingenuity, engineering and logistical effort required to sustain the liberation of Europe.

Juno Beach — 6 June 1944
The Canadian landing beach, where thousands of soldiers came ashore under heavy German resistance, beginning the liberation of Normandy.

On 6 June 1944, the Normandy coastline was transformed into a vast military operation. To coordinate the invasion, the Allies divided the coast into five main landing sectors, each identified by a code name. These names were not the traditional names of the beaches, but military designations used to organize troops, naval forces, communications and logistics.

From west to east, the five principal sectors were:

• Utah Beach — the westernmost American landing sector, on the Cotentin Peninsula.

• Omaha Beach — the American sector between Vierville-sur-Mer and Colleville-sur-Mer, where some of the fiercest fighting of D-Day took place.

• Gold Beach — the central British sector, stretching around Arromanches and towards Ver-sur-Mer.

• Juno Beach — the Canadian sector, extending from Courseulles-sur-Mer towards Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer.

• Sword Beach — the easternmost Allied sector, where British forces landed near Ouistreham.

These names were deliberately simple and easily distinguishable for military communications. “Juno,” “Gold,” “Omaha,” “Utah” and “Sword” became the names by which these stretches of coastline would forever be remembered.

Yet beneath these military code names were — and still are — real Norman villages, fishing communities and beaches: Sainte-Mère-Église, Arromanches, Courseulles-sur-Mer, Bernières-sur-Mer, Colleville-sur-Mer and many others.

Today, travelling along the Normandy coast means moving between two landscapes at once: the peaceful villages and beaches that existed before the war, and the military geography created for one extraordinary day in June 1944.
